Lupe Fiasco’s version of B.O.B’s number two Billboard hit “Airplanes” has leaked. Instead of rapping about working his way from the subway up to stardom, the underrated rapper raps about “wishes to mend a broken heart”. He also deals with other real life topics.
This is not the first song that was intended to be for Lupe, but rejected by Atlantic Records. It’s the second song to be given to newcomer B.O.B, as Lupe had also recorded “Nothin On You” featuring Bruno Mars that hit number one on Billboard charts. Once Atlantic rejected it, it lead him to tell The Guardian that he became “super-depressed, lightly suicidal, at moments medium suicidal -- and if not suicidal, willing to just walk away from it all completely."
Although he didn’t record the hit singles and his single “The Show Goes On” became a slow burner on the charts, Lupe’s album “Lasers” still managed to grab the top spot on the Billboard 200, selling 204,000 copies in its first week. This gave him his highest-charting album and highest first week sales of his career so far.
Personally, I enjoyed B.O.B’s version of the song more. His version of the song came from a personal perspective and instilled hope in others in achieving their goals. His delivery of the song was also more powerful, as Lupe’s came across as lazy. More so, I still play this song and I feel that Alex Da Kid did a fantastic job in creating a song with so much cross over appeal. It's fresh and strays away from using misogynistic lyrics present in modern rap
